Doc || The Ghost in Our Machine

The Ghost in Our Machine is a documentary that follows photojournalist Jo-Anne McArthur on her incredible journey trying to show the truth behind animal centered industries such as fur, meat, and testing labs. She learned throughout her life that she could make a much larger impact for the animals through her photography than by any other medium. The film shows the challenges that she faces in order to bring these issues to light. As a piggy momma I can't imagine seeing all that she has seen through her eyes. I am so grateful that there are people like Jo out there who can break the barrier between the invisible and the seen and make these issues shown. Wonderful film.

Vegan Goodies || Kat Von D Studded Kiss

I have been the biggest Kat Von D fan since her show LA Ink! She was just such a bad ass and so cool and now as I'm getting older she just seems to be getting cooler and cooler! She is vegan now and has been very verbal about it. She had been in the process of making her line cruelty free.  And here it is! I headed over to the mall and got me my very own Lolita Studded Kiss. So many people had been raving about how amazing the formula and the color was and let me tell you, they were right. The texture of the formula is heavenly. Many highly pigmented lipsticks have a thicker consistency that kinda ruins it for me, but this is so soft and velvety it takes the cake! So excited to try out so many of her other products. I'll keep you guys updated on that.

Happy Christmas Eve Eve everybody!

Look at his packaging! Who could resist this kind of beauty!

Vegan Goodies || Mary's Gone Crackers

By far the best crackers I've ever had. Hands down. Mary's Gone Crackers are now my new go to snack. I mean how can someone be so excited by crackers? I can't even begin to explain just how freaken good these damn crackers are. They are organic, gluten free, non-gmo and of course vegan. Made primarily of whole grain brown rice and whole grain quinoa they have a superb crunchy texture. I got my hands on these at Whole Foods but I am sure they have them at other health foods stores around. You've got to try them out!

Doc || Honor Diaries

It is incredible that so many women are getting together to change the world for the better. The film Honor Diaries shows the gathering of nine amazing human rights activist that get together to talk about real issues. The topic of conversation revolves around the killings and abuse that muslim women often endure. Woman young and old attacked, beaten and even killed all in the name of "honor." Woman given lashes for not wearing "appropriate" clothing. Women who are permanently disfigured due to acid attacks. Many times these horrendous crimes go undiscussed for fear of sounding "intolerant" to others culture or religion. These conversations need to start with us. We are the ones that are capable of starting discussions to bring about change. Without them we will remain the same. We should not fear offending groups of people due to the thought "but it's their culture." We can not tolerate violence and call it culture. We need to be the spark that starts the change. Absolutely amazing documentary.

Doc || India's Daughter

Being from the west, I had heard here and there about how severe the rape issue in India and in many other countries around the world, but never before had I been more informed than after watching the film India's Daughter. It tells the story of  Jyoti Singh, a 23 year old woman who was gang raped after going to the movies to watch a film. She received several internal injuries that were followed with surgeries but unfortunately died 13 days later due to the severity of her case. This terrifying story brought incredible amounts of attention to this issue. There were countless protest in her name and in the name of all of the people who had ben raped. The core of this social problem is how women are seen. By creating this concept that women are lesser than men, situations like this and several others will continue to happen. We as a society much re-teach our people that rape is NOT the fault of the person being raped. Also by not shaming the men and women who get raped, there are numerous cases that never get told because of the shaming that comes afterwards. This is such an unbelievable story that needs to be heard. Changes can only be made if we educate. Absolutely must watch documentary.

Kids will be Kids

Having animal companions is HARD. It is NOT easy. It is NOT always fun. People have to realize this fact. So many people out there think that having animal companions or having children is something that is going to a be a walk in the park the whole time. When in reality raising children and having pets to care after can be the most rewarding thing in life, but it is also one of the most challenging thing in life. Children will be children. Animals will be animals. They will make mistakes. They will make messes. They will upset you. That is okay. But the issue is that if you don't want to have pets ,then DON'T. If you don't want to have children, then DON'T. I thought about this issue when I walked out this morning to feed Mowgli and she had destroyed our yard. She had dug so many holes every where, it looks like she was trying to find some treasure. I just started to laugh. She's a pig and pigs like to dig. I can't get mad at the fact that she is doing what she is biologically inclined to do. I can't imagine going out and beating her for something she didn't even know was bad. I hear terrifying stories of people beating their dogs for peeing inside the house, when they didn't let the dog out! Rescuing and adopting animals are both incredible, but there are so many people that will bring an animal into their home and then treat them like some sort of object for show and have pets just to say they have one. They are social beings that deserve your time, attention and love. You choose to make them apart of your life. It is your responsibility to tend to them. Now after that rant, here are a few shots of Mowgli's masterpiece. Hahah. She was caught it mid action.

Doc || Champs

Champs is a wonderful documentary that retells the story of three of the worlds most successful boxers;  Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Bernard Hopkins. All three men had to endure incredible difficulties throughout their lives. Many boxers in the history of the sport have come from very tough backgrounds and several of them were introduced to boxing as a way to escape their positions. It is to many a way for upward mobility. The problem that comes along with their success is that many of them are not educated on handling money because so many boxers gain their popularity at a young age. Great movie showing all that comes along with the fame and fortune for these boxers.

Doc || Planet Earth

Re-watching Planet Earth, because you know, it's freakin awesome! I truly believe that everyone, regardless of age should watch it. It shows our world in a fresh new light that many have never even imagined. It is incredible to think that there are still places on our planet that no one has stepped foot on. Not to mention all of the incredible species of animals yet to be discovered. Watching documentaries like these help us realize how important it is to take care of our earth. It also helps us realize how intelligent and complex animal are. My little sister Jes can watch this all day long. And I don't mind because she learns so much every time she watches it. I encourage people to watch this.
