Rant || Blind Eye

I find it curious how people would rather turn a blind eye than to face the truth. They say "Naw I don't wanna watch that documentary, I won't wanna eat meat again." yeah. Exactly. If you can't watch an hour long documentary, or a 5 fucking minute long video about animals being killed for YOUR sake then you should NOT be paying for it. If it grosses you out that pigs and chickens have to walk in their own shit all day before being slaughtered, you probably shouldn't be eating it. Guess what that terrible video is 5 minutes in your day, but for that animal that is its whole life. An entire miserable life. And for what? Your meal, that ironically is also KILLING you. Don't let your ego blind you. I was there. I thought vegans were just pretentious assholes who thought they were better than everyone else, the fact is we are vegan because we DONT think we are better. We are vegan because we think that all animals deserve the right to live. Drop your ego. Watch the truth. Your actions have consequences, ones that are a matter of life and death.

Okay, haha. I am done with that. Here is a cute picture of Mowgli.

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Vlog || Sweet potato, fruit foraging, zero waste groceries

My first zero waste grocery trip was yesterday and it was totally awesome and easy. To be honest I was kinda nervous going into Whole Foods with our big ol' jars, but we walked straight up to the front desk and they weighed our jars and we went to fillin'. I never really paid attention (because I never bought stuff in bulk before) but Whole Foods has a killer bulk section. There are so many great products to choose from. We picked up just our essentials: red beans, black beans, oats, granola, and almonds. (I totally forgot to bring our rice jar, haha) For some reason I thought that it would be difficult but I suppose it is just like any other kind of lifestyle change, you just have to do it long enough until it becomes your norm. Not gonna lie, I felt super awesome when I was checking out knowing I didn't produce any direct waste from it. Here is a silly little vlog about our trip.

Happy Monday ya'll!

They are the same

One is fat. One is skinny. One likes to sleep. One likes to play. One looks like a hippo. One doesn't. Haha. I can go on an on about all of the little differences between Mowgli and Nana but at the end of the day they both just want to be loved. They both love when we come home from work and meet them. They love it when I bring snacks to the back yard. They love getting tummy rubs and scratched behind their ears. They love being loved. They are both intelligent, sentient beings. Luckily for Mowgli she gets to experience kindness, compassion, and kisses. But that is not true for all piggies. The only thing that truly divides pigs and dogs is the socially constructed concept of what is food and what is not. While there are several places in the world where dog is considered food, here in the west that is seen as outrageous and down right evil. Why do we think that? Because it is natural for us to care. It is natural for us to love animals. We are TAUGHT that animals are food. In those places where they eat dogs, they are taught that eating dogs is a normal act, just as we are taught in the west that eating pigs, cows and chickens is totally normal. We must learn to break this barrier. We must see that they all want to live, not just dogs and cats. They are all the same.

Zero Waste Living

I am so excited to start on this journey. I recently watched a Ted Talk (this one right here) that opened my eyes when it comes to trash. Lauren Singer spoke about how her three years worth of garbage fit into one mason jar. Like what? I couldn't even wrap my head around this idea. But as I looked further and researched more and more on the topic I was hooked. I am ready and excited to start changing things in my life to become more conscious about how much garbage I produce. I made a short video sharing my excitement.

Zero waste is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. The process recommended is one similar to the way that resources are reused in nature. I first documented everything that I used on a daily bases and then tried to make a list of all of the disposable items that I was using and seeing what reusable items I could replace them with. I will be documenting the steps that I take to make myself a little bit more environmentally friendly. I by no means think that I will be zero waste from one day to another or even ever reach Lauren Singer's status of having my trash fit into a mason jar, but I will try my best.

Eco upgrade || Made By Fressko

I got it! I have been saying for ages that I wanted to get my hands on a Made by Fressko bottle and there you go, I've got it. I mean, just look at how freaken cute it is! It has such a beautiful design I had no trouble at all picking this bottle to be my go to water bottle.

We all know how terrible it is to buy and use disposable plastic water bottles. My Plastic Free Life is an incredible blog that inspired me to start buying reusable object to replace those disposable ones. Why not start at the easiest point, water bottles. Having water on you all day will help you stay hydrated no matter where you are, so you want to get a bottle that will last. I chose Made by Fressko because of its sleek deign and bamboo top.

By taking simple (yet very impactful) steps we will all be doing our part into helping our beautiful planet out bit by bit.

Happy Wednesday!

Vegan Goodies || Amara Organic

I have been hearing so much hype about how great vitamin C serums are for your face, so I have decided to give it a go. Amara Organics is a fine line of cruelty free skin care. I chose the Vitamin C Serum.  I am super excited to see what kind of results I can get. I have combination skin and it gives me trouble pretty often so I will certainly let you guys know if I get positive results from it.

Doc || Point and Shoot

Point and Shoot is an astonishing story about a simple man, living a simple life, that is until he took a "crash course" on the Middle East. Matt VanDyke was a very timid and in his own words "sheltered" young man. We had always had a fascination for adventure but, always tended to live a very typical and average life, that is until he took his adventuring soul out for a ride. He went out to the middle east and decided he would ride his motorcycle across the land. It is very interesting to see VanDyke's idea of "manhood" throughout the film. Also his fascination for his image to others. Very fascinating story to watch.

Book || Inside of a Dog

Finished up Inside of a Dog. A great book on the mental capacities of dogs. We all know that animals can think and understand. We can see it in their eyes. We know when they are happy and we know when they are upset. This book shows to what extent they do that. I have always wondered with Mowgli and now with Nana, "What are they thinking about?" "Are they happy?" "Do they like me?" Haha. It is outrageous to think that animals have no thought process when it is clear as day. When you love on your dog or other animal companion they get excited. They wag their tails, they smile with their eyes. I love knowing that there are folks out there showing the science behind all of these actions. I hope that one day it will just be common knowledge that animals feel pain, joy, sadness, ext. so that we will stop the heinous actions that we commit to them.

Vegan Eats || New Orleans

Had an absolutely blast on New Years day eating my way through New Orleans. It was Zac's 25th birthday so it was a cause for celebration! So Zac, Pecho, and Bryan and I hit the town. We stayed pretty close to the French Market and just looked in the area for good eats.

We first found Dreamy Wennies. Dude. We hadn't had vegan hot dogs in a long time so the stakes were high. These dogs were amazing. We each picked a different dog so that we could taste them all. I chose the Vegan Andouille topped with mustard, relish, ketchup, and avocado. It was basically made it heaven and brought to my table.

Next we walked into the French market and found 3 potato 4. This amazing little cart with some serious flavor! We got one of each potato type: Russet, Red Skin and Sweet. Then we chose three different sauces: garlic ketchup, Thai chilli, and garlic pepper mayo. Can't wait to try the rest of the sauces.

Lastly we walked about 25 yards and then BAM there was The Crepe Cart. I had never had a vegan crepe before! We got the banana one. It was so incredible. I am so beyond excited that New Orleans is expanding their vegan options. Can't wait to go out there soon and explore what other goodies we can find.

Hope everyone is having a fantastic day!

What I Eat In A Day #4

Another what I eat in a day, I will be trying to pump these out once a week (no promises teheh). When I first change my lifestyle the hardest part was figuring out what to eat. So I found these videos super helpful, and still do to get ideas.

Happy Wednesday!

I want to be vegan but || I don't like veggies || Featuring The Unhealthy Vegan

Being vegan and not liking vegetables doesn't seem like it can really work, but I'm gonna let you in on a little vegan secret, YOU CAN DO IT. Now don't get me wrong, I love being a high carb, low fat, high fruit vegan but I am an ethical vegan, so sure it would be awesome if everyone was carbbed the fuck up all the time and raging on some serious watermelon but if you are eating vegan burgers and fries I'm cool with that too. My concern in the matter is that no animals are being harmed in the act of you enjoying your meal. A favored little saying among vegans is "Anything you can eat I can eat vegan." And it is true. There are so many amazing vegan goodies out there that you can go your whole life without even looking at kale (haha not that I would suggest that for your health). Here are just a few things you can get,  just to name a few:

One of my favorite non "vegany" vegans is Andre from Unhealthy Vegan. He is a pioneer if you will, of vegan deviousness. I spoke with Andre and here is what he had to say on the matter.

1. Why did you go vegan?
When I was in community college, I took an ethics class and the professor was vegan. He didn't talk much about animal ethics in class but he had a presentation and wanted us to for extra credit. I never do extra credit but for some reason I wanted to go just because I liked the professor. He then talked about the ethics of eating animals and how he was against it while another professor talked about how we was for eating animals. And after hearing both arguments, I decided there is no logical reason to eat animals. And I decided to go vegan that day.

2. What is your go to meal?
Whenever I'm in a rush I was always go for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or burgers. Something quick and easy and always delicious.

3. Best thing about being vegan?
The thought that I don't knowingly harm any animal. I'm all about peace so it just makes me feel better that I am now more peaceful than ever.

4. How did your family and friends react when you told them you went vegan?
Sadly, not that many people had a reaction. I was hoping that everyone would be shocked and appalled and I want that to spark conversations. I'm one of the last people on earth who you would think to go vegan because all I eat are pizzas and burgers and burritos. So I thought maybe they would be curious and hopefully it would spark their change to go into veganism as well. But sadly most thought it was a phase. They asked why but then tuned me out and the just said ok. I was always a little different from my family so I think they just all chalked it up to it being just part of my weirdness.

5. Number 1 tip to new vegans?
Don't crack under pressure. Don't feel bad for being vegan and just own it. You made the choice, for whichever reason you did and your sticking by that. If anyone gives you too much crap about it or they don't wanna accommodate you then don't bother with them. When I found more vegans, it made my life so much easier and I
felt better about my decision. Just remember you are the right one
😉. Own it.

Happy 2016 || To do list

Happy 2016 ya'll! I hope 2015 was everything you wanted it to be, and if not there to the new year! We spent New Years Eve at the Mississippi river seeing the awesome firework show that is put on by Baton Rouge every year. Then for New Years day/ Zac's birthday we spend the day in New Orleans eating up some delicious vegan food.  I have so many great plans for this year. I can't wait to get started. Here's my little 2016 to do list.

  • Meet up with Instagram friends- There are so many amazing people that I have the chance to know online, now it is time to hang out with them in person.
  • Drink more water (duh)- I've got some cute new water bottles just for this!
  • Be more eco friendly- I am making a list of little things here and there that I can do to be much more environmentally conscious.
  • Eat my greens- I am a crazy fruit lady, so to be completely honest, I don't always get my greens in. I am going to put my juicer to work this year!
  • Respond back immediately- I am the WORST when it comes to emailing, texting, even responding on Instagram. I am making it my mission to respond back as soon as I read messages.
  • Start mono-tasking- It is exactly what is sounds like, the opposite of multi-tasking. By doing one thing at a time I will be able to do it much faster and of a much higher quality, for whatever it is that I will be doing.
  • Write more post!- I am so excited to dedicate more time to taking pictures of all of my food and adventures and to tell you guys all about it.
I hope that everyone is having a great start to the year!
