How to lose the baby weight!

I have been meaning to make this post for fooooooorever. But I wanted to wait until I felt as though I was back to "normal" before making it. I wanted to begin by talking about how we view ourselves postpartum. After the raw emotions of having a baby have subsided the realization comes along of yourself image. It can be a very scary thought to look at yourself in the mirror after having your bundle of joy. It is down right terrifying. You are soft. And squishy, like you've never been before. You aren't pregnant, but still look pregnant. It was a little mind boggling at first. It wasn't until I really just talked to myself and was like "Dude you just had a baby, you just GAVE BIRTH" I believe that as mamas we have to love ourselves as mamas. We have to give ourselves credit and be empowered by all that we have done by carrying and delivering babies. Our bodies will look different, but that is okay. We just have to be the best versions of ourselves for the moment that we are in.

That being said, I do have a few tips. I am not a doctor or a dietician or anything of the sort, but this is just from my day to day experience.

1.Breastfeed: Breastfeeding not only creates an amazing bond between you and your baby but also is great for your body as well. Breastfeeding will help you burn extra calories and also releases hormones that will help your uterus go back to it's pre-baby size(you will fill this in the form of contractions)

2.Drink TONS of water: Duh people. Everyone knows that drinking water is amazing for you. So do it. Drinking water will keep you hydrated and will help produce more milk.

3.Eat fruits and veggies: Post baby you will need to eat and eat a lot. Especially if you are breastfeeding. So you will need to fuel yourself with the most nutritionally dense foods that you can. My go-to meal right after Luna was born was rice, beans, and avocado. I pretty much ate it every single day. Having food pre made and ready to eat is the best option. No body has time (or energy for that matter) to be making full course meals with a newborn.

4.Light exercise: This can vary from person to person. If you were an olympic athlete before pregnancy you might be able to hope back on that train faster than most. But for me that meant walking around my neighborhood, going hiking, light yoga and casual bike riding (this was wayyyy after Luna was born. When it comes to working out after a baby you have to make sure you are nice and ready. Coming from a traditional El Salvadorian family my mom suggested (forced me) to be extremely gentle on myself for the first 40 days after having Luna.

I hope these tips help some mamas out there! If you guys have any questions feel free to message me here or on any of my other platforms.

Plaine Products || Zero Waste Shampoo and Conditioner

The time is here for zero waste shampoo and conditioner! So once I starting adapting a zero waste lifestyle somethings came pretty easy, like carrying a reusable water bottle, refusing straws at  restaurants, and carrying tote bags around, while other things were much more difficult, like finding shampoos and conditioners that didn't come in a plastic containers. Many haircare products come in recyclable plastic but much of what we put into the recycling bins don't get recycled at all. So the best way is to avoid plastic when possible. So my quest went on. I found solid shampoo bars but they didn't particularly work on my hair texture (my hair is huge lol and can be kinda dry).

Then I found Plaine Products, a revolutionary line of bath products that is changing the game. The products themselves are vegan, sulfate free, color safe, biodegradable, non-gmo, cruelty free, paraben free and kid safe and made in the US. And the containers are metal bottles! The only plastic is the pump. The way it works is your order your subscription of any combination of shampoo, conditioner and body wash (I got all three) and once you use it all up you just return them back in the box they were sent in and they send you a new batch! I mean it really can't get any easier.

Now the only thing I was wanting to know was "Does it work though??" And the answer to that is yessssssssss. I bought my set about a month ago and wanted to see how my hair would react to it and it works amazingly. Like I said my hair is large and in charge and in this Louisiana humidity it doesn't play. Haha. The Plaine Products shampoo and conditioner leave my hair feeling soft and manageable. Not to mention it smells incredible! I get so giggly when I find a product that alines with my values to the T but this just makes my heart sing ya'll. A vegan, American made, zero waste, awesome line of products, it just cannot be beat. Check out there products by clinking the link here!

I am the Child of Immigrant Refugees

I am the child of not one but two immigrant refugees. My parents both fled what remained of their civil war in the early 90s. They faced danger around every corner. They saw countless of their friends  and family disappear to the tragedies of war. They came here seeking a better life. A life without fear. A life full of opportunities. And they found it all here. I was able to be born in Houston and both Pecho and Jes were born here in Louisiana. We have had the most amazing life because they were able to escape the terrors of war.

It was always so difficult for me to really wrap my head around what the war was really like growing up. I just couldn't imagine waking up in the morning and being absolutely terrified to go to school or go to the market. Countless parents wouldn't let their children go to school out of fear. As a parent now it absolutely crushes my heart that so many mothers and fathers around the world live in perpetual fear for their children's lives.

It is easy to judge a group of people and label them as violent or threats, but by learning their stories it completely changes your perspective. We must all take a step back and imagine ourselves in their shoes. What would you do? Would you seek refuge? Would you do anything to protect your children?

Life Update: House Fire

Hey ya'll I know I haven't been around much lately. On Saturday January 28th we had a house fire. Luckily we weren't home when it happened. We were at my mother in law's house when our neighbor called Zac. We are so fortunate to have amazing neighbors who went and took Mowgli from out the backyard. We did in fact though loose all of our possessions. It is very difficult to put into words. I had been meaning to give you guys an update but every time I sat down to type I would just freeze. We are now settled into our apartment and all of our friends and family have been so unbelievably helpful in the process. Cannot thank everyone enough for all of the help that we have received, everything from baby clothes for Luna all the way to just long rants on the phone. Thank you all so so so much for it all. I film a short video the day of the fire.

2017 To Do List

This post is about 10 days too late. But no worries. Haha.

2016 was by far the greatest year of my life. Most exciting, most rewarding, most incredible. That being said, I already know that 2017 will be even better. This year will be actioned packed with traveling, learning, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Here are some of my new years resolutions/to do list

    • I say this every year and every year I get a little bit better. I have a HUGE list of books that I want to get through this year on a wide variety of topics. The library will be seeing much more of me.
  • Learn more
    • About everything and anything. Learn more about social changes, history, science, diet, culture, everything. I want to learn how to sew. I want to learn about graphic design. I want to learn more about my Nican Tlaca culture. I want to learn more about everything.
  • Meditate more
    • I started meditating last year and it changed something in me. I became almost addicted to the feeling that I got afterward. A sense of calm that is so difficult to explain. It made me a gentler person. I want to practice more and get better at it.
  • Do more yoga
    • Zac bought me a membership to a yoga studio in town and I could not be more excited about it. I want to experience everything that yoga has to offer, not only the physical benefits but also the mental and spiritual ones as well.
  • Run more
    • I have my first 5k since being pregnant on this Saturday. Saying that I am nervous would be a huge understatement. I am terrified, but I am also ecstatic. I use to be an avid runner and am very stoked about getting back into it. I even got me and Luna a pretty rad running stroller.

  • Be present
      • Being present is by far my most important thing on this years to do list. Luna has helped me so much with this in just the few weeks that she has been here. I am so entranced with her that I am so completely focused on her. I absolutely love it. I want to be more present in everything that I do.
I cannot wait to see what this year has to bring. I am sure it will be even better than the last. Make sure to make your year awesome.
